As an example, regular crack sealing extends the life of asphalt roads and parking areas at very low cost, keeping surface water from entering open cracks and joints. As the pavement ages, milling and resurfacing the bituminous pavement while saving the value of the aggregate base is a lower-cost rehabilitation method to restore the pavement to a nearly new condition. However, if no regular maintenance is performed, and the cracks develop into extensive potholes and general base failure, total reconstruction will be required at a much higher construction cost, in addition to causing much greater disruption to the local residents.
